Save South Oconee is dedicated to preserving and protecting the farmland, natural resources, and rural character of South Oconee through education, research, and community engagement.
We support solutions to traffic.
We insist on having a voice in where and how those solutions are implemented.

Current Georgia DOT numbers provided do not show justification for a bypass, nor does the bypass address the traffic issues downtown Watkinsville.
Protected Avian Species:
The area is home to Bald Eagles and Golden Eagles, which are among 12 migratory birds under federal protection in the proposed area.
Endangered Mammals:
The presence of the endangered Gray Bat, along with the proposed endangered Tri-colored Bat, makes this corridor ecologically sensitive.
Pollinator Habitats:
The proposed routes threaten Monarch Butterfly relies on the specific flora found in these fields and generational farmsteads. Introducing high-volume truck traffic and chemical runoff through these habitats risks permanent ecological damage and potential federal legal complications for the project.
